Make use of summer break!
Issue date: 5/5/10 Section: News
Summer break is finally here! It's time to celebrate, go out and party then chill right? Wrong!
Most students view summer break as a time to slack off and be lazy until it is time to go back to school. However, that isn't always the best decision. The summer is the prime season for sharpening up on things in order to come back a better student in the fall.
There are several opportunities available to students to make their summer break more productive.
While the primary idea of summer break is to give the student a break academically, it can be extremely beneficial to participate in summer school. Class sessions are much shorter than normal semesters with most classes lasting for only eight weeks. Students have the opportunity to gain the same amount of credit for the eight week class as they would if they took the class during a regular 16-week semester.
Students should also consider participating in workshops regarding their major. While they may not receive college credit for such workshops, one thing students can gain is experience, as well as first-hand advice and instruction from people who are actively involved in a particular craft.
For students who want to get experience in their craft during summer break there is the option of finding a job or finding an internship. The internship is one of the best things to do during summer break. Not only can students gain firsthand experience in their trade, but they can also receive potential job opportunities and college credit.
Now for those students who may not want to go to summer school, participate in a workshop, can't find an internship or are not eligible to have an internship, doing simple things might be an option. Students should join a book club in order to keep their minds cultivated and to become more cultured over the summer. Students can also have a productive summer by volunteering at various places and making a difference in the community. Volunteering is also another opportunity for students to gain experience in different tasks.
These are just a few choices for what a student can do with their time during the summer. The break can only be as fun and productive as one makes it, so why not take the opportunity to make this summer break one of the greatest breaks ever?
