De'Vin Lewis is well known on Langston's campus for her strong vocal performances, and she will soon have a chance to impress larger audiences at the Pollard Theatre in Guthrie.
The shows that Lewis will perform in are "Thoroughly Modern Mille" and "Smokey Joe's Café." Lewis plays Muzzy Van Hossmere, one of the leading roles, in "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Lewis said the musical is about a young woman who leaves her hometown in the country to find a rich man and a life of her own in New York. The second musical, "Smokey Joe's Café," is a show that has rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs from the 50s and 60s.
Timothy Stewart, the director of both musicals, said the things that stood out to him the most about Lewis was her strong voice, personality, and the way Lewis portrays her character.
Lewis, a 29-year-old senior from Dallas, Texas, is thrilled to showcase her talents and represent LU at the Pollard Theatre. She will be the only African American performing in the musicals, which she said is an honor and privilege.
"At first I wasn't sure to even audition, but I knew that I needed more experience in this field. I enjoy singing and performing in front of an audience. It's my passion in life," Lewis said.
Lewis said she discovered her passion for singing at the age of 6 when she joined the choir at her elementary school. She has been performing since she was 11 years old, but her first audition was in the fifth grade for a show called "Star Search." Lewis said she actually won the competition but her school didn't have the funds to send her to California to be on the nationally televised show.
Lewis said since she started performing she has always had someone to support her.
"My mom has always been a supporter in anything I do. Once I came to the point of wanting to sing she's always been there, even if she couldn't make it because of work I knew that she had my back regardless," Lewis said.
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" will run from April 2 - May 2, 2010 and "Smokey Joe's Café" will run from June 4 - 26, 2010. For dates, times and tickets, call the Pollard Theatre at (405) 282-2800.
