Act Like a Gentleman, Think Like a Woman" was written in response to Steve Harvey's bestselling "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man" because the author felt that Mr. Harvey didn't quite get it right. As Bustillos says, "He (Steve Harvey) claims to be aiding women by telling them all about the secrets of men, so that they can get what they want ("the Ring," etc.) from them. Surely it is only fair that a sympathetic woman should do men the same favor, and divulge all our secrets to them: and I am that woman." Maria Bustillos, the author of "Dorkismo: the Macho of the Dork" indicates that she feels as sorry for all the "lonely, frustrated men" out there as Mr. Harvey apparently feels for all the "lonely, frustrated women" who can't get what they want. In this book filled with sarcasm, she sets out to help these lonely, frustrated men.

She tells the reader, "I will be assuming at the outset, of course, that all you want is the one thing. I won't be crediting you with any kind of conscience, nor scruples, nor any desire to get to know women as individuals and human beings." Her entire book is a satirical response to Steve Harvey's assertion that the one and only thing that men want from women is to get them to bed. Occasionally, her tone shifts and she does give some good advice, such as not allowing yourself to be forced into marriage by anyone for any reason. She speaks highly of marriage in the penultimate chapter where she says, "Marriage can really be heaven on earth, but it's the kind of heaven you build yourself, brick by celestial brick, from the sweat of your brow, from your heart's blood." Finally, she makes the point that "If we can learn to operate according to the truth, rather than a lot of … outmoded "game-playing," things are bound to go much better."
