Courtland Powers smiles for the camera with excitement in her eyes upon becoming the 64th Miss Langston University.

Courtland Powers proved that determination, hard work, and a little patience pays off with her win of the Miss Langston University title on Friday, Feb. 6.

Powers, who has vied for the title twice before, competed against four other young ladies in the C.F Gayles Gymnasium: Dontreka Mathews, a sophomore psychology major form Amarillo Texas; Joneice Smith, a sophomore business management major from Austin, Texas; Eleanor Zachary, a sophomore business administration major from Oklahoma City, Okla; and Denah Martin, a junior business management major from Tulsa, Okla.

Moments after being crowned, Powers, a 21-year-old organizational management major from Edmond, Okla., shared her excitement about winning the coveted title.

"I am already looking forward to my duties this year, traveling, meeting new people, and getting the word out about my platform, which is Dream Big, Yes YOU Can," Powers said.

As Miss Langston University, Powers will receive a $2,000 scholarship, and the opportunity to compete for the Miss Oklahoma title in Tulsa, Okla. June 5-10, 2010.

During her reign, Powers will be the official goodwill ambassador of Langston University. She will travel throughout Oklahoma visiting elementary and high schools, advocating her platform issue, and telling the Langston story.

Deshnick Lewis, director of the Miss Langston University Scholarship Pageant, believes that she will represent the school well.

"Powers embodies the qualities a role model should have for young women on this campus," Lewis said. "She's talented, ambitious and accomplished. We are excited about working with her this year."

Along with winning the Miss Langston University title, Powers snagged the awards for interview with the judges, eveningwear, swimsuit, and on-stage question. Martin took home the award for Miss Congeniality. Second runner up Zachary won ad sales, while first runner up Mathews won talent.

Do you think making it so there are only two ways in and out of campus was a good idea?
