A seminar was offered to raise the awareness of fighting off an attacker on Nov. 23 in the Allied Health Building.
The seminar was co-sponsored by the Lambda Alpha chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the Phi Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and facilitated by Courtenay Muhammad and Malcolm Muhammad, both Omegas and Jiu Jitsu instructors on campus.
Different techniques to fend off an attacker were taught to the audience, including how to pull away from an attacker and how to get people's attention when one is being attacked. Malcolm Muhammad also stressed that how size does not matter when one is on the ground.
"The ground is the ocean and you are the shark," Malcolm Muhammad said.
Malcolm went on to say that anything can be used choke to your attacker, especially hoodies and nylon jackets.
Courtenay Muhammad has been teaching Jiu Jitsu for five years but has practiced the art for 11 years. Courtenay says he got into Jiu Jitsu because of the line of work he does; he is a security guard and it helps to control situations should they get out of control.
Courtenay said there are some applications in Jiu Jitsu that can be used in general self- defense. A few of the tips are to yell loud and use harsh language, aim for soft areas of the face like the nose, kick shins and knees, gouge at eyes, and to try and break the thumb of attacker.
