Omegas honor members

The members of the Phi Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity Inc. and the organizations graduate chapter Upsilon Iota, capped off their Achievement Week celebration Nov 20 with a Founder's Day program.
The founder's day program took place in the atrium to honor fraternity members, for the hard work they have shown in the community and within the organization.
Omega Psi Phi fraternity Inc. was founded Nov. 17, 1911 on the campus of Howard University by one faculty advisor, Earnest Everett Just, and three undergraduates: Frank Coleman, Oscar J. Cooper and Edgar A. Love. The Phi Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi was chartered July 21, 1933 and is the first undergraduate chapter of Omega for the state of Oklahoma.
The evening was filled with singing, poetry and words of wisdom. The Langston University Ensemble Group brought two selections, including the a capella piece total praise.
The speaker for the night was Centennial Courts resident director and Grambling State Omega Psi Phi 1981 initiate Russell LeDay. LeDay's speech, "Through friendship, Brotherhood, and Fraternity," Focused on unity and how important it is to obtain in the fraternity.
"We will not be able to be successful in anything we seek after unless we come together and can focus and be unified on one accord," LeDay said.
Michael Birdow a senior gerontology major from Tyler, Texas and the Basileus for the Phi Psi chapter, said he enjoyed the ceremony as well as helping to give plaques to his fellow brothers. Eric Harris received Omega Man of the Year, Kourtney Muhammad received the highest GPA award, and Malcolm Muhammad received the community service award.
"Basically, I enjoyed the people coming out and getting a chance to see Omega since we aren't a public fraternity," Birdow said.
He went on to say that without unity and friendship, Omega couldn't achieve their goals because friendship is essential to the soul.
According to Birdow Omega Psi Phi Achievement Week was founded by member Carter G. Woodson, and developed into what we now call Black History Month.
