The Oklahoma Political Science Association (OPSA) presented Langston University Assistant Professor Dr. Meshack Sagini with the Outstanding Oklahoma Political Scientist Award for his extensive research during a conference held last month in Ada, Okla.

Sagini has been working in the social science department at Langston University for the last 19 years. Not only has he been instructing students over the years, he has also been conducting research outside of the lecture hall. Sagini published his first book, "The African and African American University," in 1996. Since then he has published three other books and a variety of articles. According to Sagini, there is still much more for him to learn.

Sagini has received various awards recognizing him for exceptional skills as an instructor, including "Who's Who among American Teachers." However, Sagini says being recognized by his peers sets his award from OPSA apart from all the others.

"I have received other awards but this one was different because I was among professional colleagues in the same field. I finally felt as if I belonged in political science," he said.

The Oklahoma Political Science Association is an organization for political science instructors across Oklahoma. Sagini says he has been a member of OPSA since 1992 and has given numerous presentations at state and national conferences.

Fellow colleague and Langston University instructor, Dr. Mose Yvonne Hooks, nominated Sagini for the award. Hooks says that Sagini's extensive research in social sciences and his reputation with his students is what inspired her to nominate Sagini.

"Dr. Sagini has remained active in social sciences by doing an extensive amount of research and publishing four books. Furthermore, his students commend him for being an outstanding professor in the social sciences department," Hooks said.

Along with Hook's nomination, in order to be considered for the award, Dr. Sagini had to submit a resume that included a list of his publications along with his student evaluations.

Sagini says he is proud of what he had accomplished over the years. He says that winning the award was a very humbling experience.

"Professors are there to represent the university. Their accomplishments reflect where they come. It made me happy just to be there and represent Langston University," Sagini said.

According to Sagini, life after winning this award will go on. He says he will continue with his research because it is what keeps him committed to his profession.

"I usually go to bed at 10 p.m. and I am up by 3 a.m. to do research. That's part of my job," Sagini said.

Dr. Sagini's fifth book is in the process of being published. Two copies of his first book, "The African and African American University," can be found in the Black Heritage Library.
