On Nov. 19, Langston students received "A Taste of the Harlem Renaissance" during Delta Sigma Theta's annual Mr. Debonair & Miss Jabberwock Scholarship Pageant.
Tevin Jones and Danielle Skinner walked away as the new 2009-2010 Mr. Debonair and Miss Jabberwock.
Jones, a freshman biology major from Los Angeles, Calif., and Skinner, a junior broadcast journalism major from Denver Colo., both competed against five other talented young men and women.
The contestants for Mr. Debonair were Jordan Williams, Jonathan Coleman, Isaiah Woods, Brandon Clark and L.J. Mahone. Shantel Leonard, Tatiana Easley, Charis Garrett, Angela King and Angela Glander competed for the title of Miss Jabberwock.
Jones rocked the audience with a drum selection composed by him and Richard Hogg titled "Funk Groove." Skinner moved the crowd with a poem titled "To All the Boys I Ever Loved," written by Mayda De Valle. Other talents that graced the stage Thursday evening included praise dances, monologues, poems, and a few solo selections.
As Mr. Debonair, Jones will begin to implement his platform around campus, "Bringing Back the Funk," which he says will allow him to inform students of the significance of music. He said he will host music clinics and jam sessions geared toward introducing alternatives for students besides sports and watching television. Skinner plans to encourage female freshmen to love themselves and who they are.
Although there could only be one Mr. Debonair and Miss. Jabberwock, many showed their support for the first place runner-ups, Isaiah Woods and Angela Glander.
As the pageant concluded, a bitter sweet moment turned into an even sweeter one for former Miss Jabberwork, Courtney Clark. After the passing of her crown she was asked for her hand in marriage by Leland Fin.
