The men's basketball team may have begun their season with a shaky start, but Head Basketball Coach Greg Webb is confident that his team will make it to the national tournament.

Webb is excited to begin his tenth season with this year's team. He feels that the team has better chemistry, less selfishness and a more balanced attack offensively and defensively.

"I really think they have done a great job of bonding with each other and playing well together, and if we can keep that going on and off the court we will have a great year," Webb said.

According to Webb, there are a few players who he expects to stand out, but he says it can be anybody on any night. The main returner is Alvin Lewis, who is the starting point guard. He led the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) in three point percentage last year and Webb looks forward to early leadership from him. Chris Higgins has been in the program four years and Webb looks for consistency in him. Webb also expects great things from Chris Tyler, "CT," and says Tyler has made a lot of improvement since last year. Tyler says he feels that the team is going to have a great season and expects to win conference.

"I feel like we can go real far. We filled a lot of voids that we had last season and a lot of people stepped up to the plate as far as bettering themselves on the court mentally and physically, including myself," Tyler said.

Webb is also thrilled about the new transfers and expects big things from them. One of those players is Catrell Currie, a transfer from Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Webb says that Currie is capable of putting up big numbers and is a good leader. Other transfers include Isaiah Johnson and Babs Somoye. Webb says Somoye is a "big body" and if he continues to work on his skill level he will have a big influence on the team.

According to Webb, their keys to success this season will be how well they defend in transition and rebound. He also says he has really good shooters and if they are able to shoot well then that will open up the inside game. Although many teams may work inside out, Webb says that they are stronger on the perimeter right now than they are in the inside.

The Lions schedule will continue to be tough this season but Webb says that he prepares his team to take each game as it is. He believes conference play should be well balanced and very competitive and they are not going to under estimate any opponent.
