A safe sex seminar was hosted by the group Taking Health In a New-Direction (THIN) on Nov. 11 in the atrium to remind students of the consequences of unprotected sex.
In the seminar there were three stations that the students went through. The first station taught people the proper way to place a condom on a male's penis. In between the first and second station there was a game students could play. They could pick either to rub, hug, touch, kiss, or bite another individual and depending on what they chose it determined what STD they could contract. As students finally made their way to the second station, they looked to see what the side effects for the STD they contracted were. The third station had a video that showed that even though a person can get caught up in the moment, it's always important to make sure that you always practice safe sex.
The team leader of THIN, Whitney Traylor, said she was influenced by the statistics of Oklahoma when it comes to STDs.
"Just looking at some of the statistics, Oklahoma is twenty-eighth in the United States to have the most STDs. It made me want to promote it [safe sex], especially on this campus when people complain there is nothing to do and sex is something that a lot of people do," Traylor said.
Traylor feels that the event should be held annually.
"I want to try to have the seminar annually because of the turnout and the knowledge gained by the students who attended the event."
Moses Hurry, a junior from Oklahoma City, Okla., feels that the event was beneficial and informative.
"Even though I already practice safe sex, I'll practice it more because I already knew about the risk of STDs and aids this actually makes you more aware of it," Hurry said.
