It's always a beautiful thing when a team can come together and produce great results. The LU Lions football team proved just that these past two weeks. So for this week, I'm spotlighting the Langston University football team.
The Lions topped homecoming festivities by mauling the Texas College Steers (Oct 17th) 53-20. This past Saturday (Oct 24th), the Lions won a nail-bitter against Southern Nazarene University (SNU) 20-19. SNU had a chance to win on a 41-yard game-winning field goal, but a botched snap gave the victory to the Lions.
The Lions have an overall record of seven and two, and three and one in conference play. The team's success has been evident on field as well as in the stats book.
Offensively, the Lions are ranked in the top 25 in the nation for five categories. So far this season, the Lions' offense has produced a total of 3119 yards (1605 rush, 1514 pass) and 30 touchdowns (16 rush, 14 pass). Sophomore quarterback Darrion Lewis, and senior tight end Tony Cotton, both gives all the credit to the offensive line.
Senior left tackle Aayron Polk said, "We [offensive line] really do have a great level of trust with each other; no matter who we're playing beside and in order to be successful you have to have that."
Defensively, the Lions' defense has 23 turnovers (17 interceptions, six fumble recoveries), 17 sacks and 10 forced fumbles. Also known as Code Red, the Lions' defense so far is ranked top 25 in the nation for 10 defensive categories. Some defensive players who are having a great year are senior Rodrick Jenkins, sophomore Derrick Butler, junior Brandon Lee, sophomore Dominique Turner and junior Mark Brown.
