While vocational training plays a key role in the center life at Guthrie Job Corps, every student is encouraged to obtain a GED or high school diploma through academic training prior to leaving the center.
Academic training includes basic reading and math courses as well as courses in independent living, employability skills, and social skills, which are offered in order to help students transition into the workplace easily.
"The academic training program serves as a catalyst for our students to receive a good education as well as to obtain a quality job. They also benefit because they are able to focus on their course work, whereas the traditional college student has to worry about finances and things of that nature," says Joy Newton, the community liaison for Guthrie Job Corps.
Although at Guthrie Job Corps trainees are able to work with professionals and gain hands-on experience in a trade, academics play a serious role in almost every Job Corps' students daily routine.
Samantha, a trainee at Guthrie Job Corps, enrolled into the institution in July of 2008. Since then she worked very hard in the academic training program and completed several courses in English and math in order to achieve her goal of receiving a high school diploma in this year's winter graduation ceremony. Samantha describes the center as a self-paced atmosphere and said that this is one of the reasons why she enjoys the academic program.
"You can work really hard and get your GED or diploma in a short amount of time, or some people choose to work at a slower and take their time," she said.
Since she has obtained her diploma, Samantha now plans to focus full time on her trade, which is welding. She hopes to obtain certification soon.
However, choosing to study a trade is not always the case. Students at Guthrie Job Corps have the opportunity to further their education at several colleges or universities in the state of Oklahoma, including Rose State and Langston University.
