"The Poisonwood Bible"

"The Poisonwood Bible" is an amazing novel that combines recent African history and culture with the painful story of a family on a mission to devastation. The Price family is led by Nathan, an evangelical Baptist minister who may not be mad, but who takes his marching orders from a voice no one else can hear. His religious intentions are not sanctioned by a church, but have grown from personal need to control his world. The family sets up its religious mission in a village called Kilanga, in the Congo in 1959, amid terrible incidents of murder and mayhem as the rebellion grows. His wife, Oleanna, begins the story with a stunning backward look at the family's time in Africa, and then each of the Price's four daughters adds another layer to the story which builds to a terrible climax, all the while, moving through a time of horror and misery for all concerned.

This book is gripping and exhilarating all at once, and the reader will leave with an experience unlike anything they have ever read before.
