Approximately 7,000 abortions are performed in Oklahoma a year and 1.3 million are performed nationwide, according to Vaginal Births After Cesarean (VBAC). Out of that million, African American women account for 35 percent of the abortions performed while they only represent 12 percent of the female population.
Linda Stewart, executive director of Crossroads Clinic in Guthrie, finds these numbers appalling. She and her staff hope to reduce the number of women who terminate their pregnancies by providing services that help women consider all of their options.
The clinic opened on Mother's Day of 1990 and was called Birthright. In 2006, the name was changed to Crossroads Clinic: An Open Door for Life Choices, Inc. The name has a very special meaning to Stewart.
"We meet people who have come to crossroads in their lives physically, spiritually, or emotionally. We meet young people making important life decisions," Stewart said.
When the clinic first opened it provided clients with food, clothing, formula and diapers. Crossroads later expanded their services and added abortion education, abstinence education, pregnancy tests, doula services and seminars on parenting skills. Now, as a medical clinic, they also offer free ultrasounds, and through this process they introduce women to their unborn child.
Stewart said Crossroads is committed to providing its clients with accurate and complete information about both prenatal development and pregnancy termination.
