Langston University-Tulsa will celebrate Black History Month with an event that commemorates the heritage of African-Americans and the 100 year anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
In honor of the NAACP's centennial anniversary, the LU-Tulsa's sociology department will co-host "The Relevance of Civil Rights Groups in the 21st Century" on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the auditorium.
The symposium will be moderated by KTUL News Channel 8 reporter Kim Jackson. Panelists include representatives from the NAACP, Urban League of Tulsa, and the City of Tulsa's Department of Human Rights. The event is free and open to the public.
Founded on Feb. 12, 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. More than half a million members and supporters throughout the United States and the world advocate for civil rights in their communities and monitor equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
LU-Tulsa is located just north of downtown at 700 N. Greenwood Avenue, near I-244 and Detroit Avenue. For more information, call Dr. Art Williams at 918-594-8462.
