Issue date: 11/12/08 Section: Sports
The ninth-ranked Langston University Lions have played in three Homecoming games this season and remain undefeated in all of them. The Lions traveled to Bethany, Okla. to face the Southern Nazarene Crimson Storm on Saturday at the Crimson Storm Football Complex and defeated the Crimson Storm 30-7, moving them to 8-2 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the Central States Football League.
Langston started off at the game with a 49-yard pass from Danny Lowery to Stephan Conley. Conley pulled the ball down on the 10-yard line, but unfortunately, the Lions couldn't get into the endzone and missed the field goal attempt.
Southern Nazarene took over at the 20-yard line and started to make their way down field before the Lions' Mark Brown intercepted a Brady Wardlaw pass. The Lions then drove the ball back into their red zone, but still were unable to put the ball in the endzone. Kicker Clarence McDonald, however, connected on his next field goal attempt to put the first point of the game on the scoreboard.
The Lions offense began to put the heat on the Storm defense by continuously finding the endzone-beginning with a Raytron Mayfield 1-yard run, followed by a 9-yard pass from Lowery to Mayfield. Lowery connected with Conley for a 17-yard touchdown and on a special teams play, gunner DeWayne Stingley recovered a fumble in the endzone for the Lions' final score of the game.
The Lions' scored 30 straight points before the Crimson Storm was able to score with 0:00 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.
On the day, Lowery was 23 for 34 with 331 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 34 yards. Lowery's 365 total yards on the day was a career high. Conley also had a career high with five receptions for 142 yards and one touchdown. Mayfield had 114 yards receiving and one touchdown on 10 catches and rushed for another nine yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, the Lions' were led by Christian Torres and Cayetano Hingle. Torres and Hingle both finished with six tackles. Brandon Kennard had five tackles, but picked up two more sacks on the season, giving him a total of 12. Darnell Brown picked off his eighth pass of the year, inching him closer to the LU season and career records. Samuel Draper intercepted his first pass of the season in the Lions' effort.
The playoff-bound Langston University Lions will close the regular season in W.E. Anderson Stadium next Saturday against the Bacone College Warriors. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
