Issue date: 9/24/08 Section: Entertainment
Ben Kincaid, top-notch defense attorney turned unlikely U.S. Congressman from Oklahoma, finds himself in the middle of a deadly game of political intrigue. Asked to accompany the president to honor the victims and their familiesof the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Kincaid finds himself and the other speakers the targets of snipers. The president's wife is killed in the onslaught.
During the course of investigating this tragedy, serious questions are raised about national security and how to best protect it. While the mystery is being unraveled by Kincaid and his staff of first-rate characters, there are serious questions raised about the necessary balance between the need for security and the protection of the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. Kincaid is pressured to help bring unity during this time of crisis by joining a bi-partisan coalition in support of greater government control over American's lives during times of crisis, while his new wife adamantly supports the rights of the individual to privacy and the freedoms of speech and assembly. It is a timely topic for our times and provides strong arguments from both sides of the issue.
Be forewarned that there are chapters containing graphic depictions of cruel torture techniques used to gather information from key characters. While they likely portray the true nature of international espionage, they may cause great discomfort to some readers.
