This book depicts life in Oklahoma's historically Black towns. In fact, Langston University's Melvin B. Tolson Black Heritage Center is mentioned several times as the premier center for historical research. Edward Grady, a Langston artist and a librarian at the BHC, actually designed the cover of the book. African and Native American oral tradition frame this narrative.
Erma, a strong, determined woman, is a compelling heroine. She deals with issues of loneliness and romantic love with wisdom and sensitivity. True to her vocation, she struggles to maintain the highest ethical standards. Students play a vital role in helping her win the fight against her supernatural foes.
Students who are interested in religion and fantasy set in Oklahoma's Black towns would enjoy this book. It can be found at the BHC under the call number 813.6 Un53f.
