Mt. Bethel Baptist Church was packed to capacity this past Sunday as three students were awarded the Dr. John W. Coleman Scholarship.

The students, one of whom is a student at Langston, were presented their scholarships in the amount of $500 by Reverend Jimmie L. McCarroll, chairperson of the scholarship committee. The John W. Coleman Scholarship is an annual award that is given to deserving and qualified students for their academic achievement. The sole purpose of the scholarship is to assist students financially who are committed to a life of service commensurate with the service of the late Dr. John W. Coleman, a former Langston professor, Mt. Bethel Pastor, and resident of Langston.

Two of the receiving students are high school seniors and first time recipients. However, this was Langstonite Leethanial Brumfield's second time receiving this scholarship.

"Even though I didn't know Dr. Coleman, I can see the legacy that he left, which is reflected through his Mt. Bethel family," Brumfield said.

Danielle Jones, a senior at Guthrie High School, is also very grateful to be one of the chosen recipients of the scholarship.

"I feel honored to be awarded this scholarship. This was my first time applying for it, and I got it," Jones said.

Members of Triumph Baptist Church were invited to join in the celebration and they showed up in great numbers. Prior to the presentation was a banquet, musical selections from both choirs and the

message for the evening by Reverend James Dorn of Mt. Triumph Baptist Church.

The Coleman Scholarships Trust Fund was established May 28, 1994 in honor of Coleman. According to McCarroll, $16,000 was in the fund in 1994, and it has increased to an estimated $61,000.

"One Sunday a total of $8,000 was donated by the church, and the Lord just keeps on blessing us," McCarroll said.

Mt. Bethel encourages any high school or college student who wishes to apply to seek this scholarship opportunity.
