Student Support Services (SSS) of Langston University will host an informational and open house for students who are enrolled in the SSS program on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the I.W. Young Auditorium.
During the informational students will learn about upcoming events in SSS and about new information that they need to know for the semester.
According to Harvey Bragss, a SSS retention specialist, the program was created to help freshman have a peaceful transition from high school to college. However, anyone can join after completing an application. The service offers tutoring, mentoring, workshops on how to handle stress and finances, and trips to various events.
"Our main objective is to mentor and tutor students and build retention so students can graduate from college," Braggs said.
There are currently 250 students involved in SSS. Many say they have benefited from the program.
"As far as me coming to Langston as a freshman with no guidance, they were a big help with mentoring and they assist you in making the correct choices and they are always available," said Tatiana Reed, a sophomore nursing major.
"SSS has helped me with my academics. There are people with open minds involved in this program who are nice and that you feel free to talk to, not only about school but about life," said Juliennne Habiyambere, a junior nursing/gerontology major.
Students interested in joining SSS may contact Lukata Lawrence, director of SSS, at 466-3431.
