Williams has been working in the CIO position for about nine weeks, and has already begun implementing changes. He re-negotiated the university's contract with its telecommunications vendor. Under the old contract, the university had 27 separate contracts, which he says wasted money; it now has one contract. He has also changed the name of the IT department-formally known as Unitized Data Systems (UDS)-to Information Technology Services (ITS), which he feels better reflects the services the IT department provides.
Two of Williams' major plans for ITS include redesigning the university website and bringing wireless technology to the campus. He feels the website is outdated and does not represent the metamorphosis that Langston is going through. He also stressed that the website is the initial representation of the university and he has received negative comments about the look, feel, and usability of the website. He says the new website will have a nicer design and also allow the university to deliver online classes so students who are not able to be on campus can still be productive. With wireless technology, students and staff will be able to use their computers anywhere on campus.
Williams hopes to have a positive impact on the university.
"I'm excited about my opportunity to leave a legacy," Williams says.

I am so glad Dr. Haysbert has created this position, and I am also glad that Wiliiams plans to update the university website. The website is so horrible and out of date. (Continued…)
