Silvia Walker, a junior science agriculture business major from Panama, Central America, has formed Club Inspirational to motivate and uplift LU students.
According to www.education.yahoo.com, inspiration is defined as the stimulation of the mind or emotions to a high level of feeling or activity; divine guidance, or influence exerted directly on the mind and soul of human kind.
Club Inspirational has three objectives: to uplift people, to help people find a way to make a difference, and to drive people out of a solution of concern. The officers are Silvia Walker, president/founder; Ashley Tookes, vice president; Odillia Olivarez, secretary; and Donna Tosell, treasurer. The advisor is Dr. Edmund Kloh, whom is also the advisor for the English department.
Walker knows from experience that college students may endure several hardships as they struggle to establish who they are in the world, and she hopes the organization is able to help students with anything that affects their lives.
"Sometimes something happens in your life that is so profound, so astonishing and so big that you know everything has changed and you will never be who you were before again," said Walker.
Walker feels students need to know that they can make a difference by joining a club, or some function.
So far the club has 21 members. Walker and other members have already been active in the community. They marched in the Martin Luther King Jr. parade on Jan.16 and plan to live out Dr. King's dream by being involved in all kinds of activities involving the community.
"Just from the outcome of marching in the parade and from our first club meeting that we had on Feb. 7, some students have been touched," said Walker.
To join Club Inspirational one must be a Langston University student and have at least a 3.0 GPA; however, students who don't have a 3.0 GPA are still encouraged to attend the meetings and be active, although they will not be an official member until they meet the GPA requirement.
Walker says that students will be notified about meetings by flyers. Students interested in joining club inspirational can call Walker at 405-466-3063 for more information.
