Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hosted their annual Black and Gold Stepshow / Afterparty on Saturday, March 4.
This year's show featured five Greek organizations: Tau Beta Sigma National Honor Band Sorority, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honor Band Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
The step show started with an appearance from local group "Got Getta" and the introduction of comedian Donnell Johnson, who served as the host. This gave the audience just enough time to get some of their "krunkness" out and prepare for Johnson's welcome for Alpha Phi Alpha, the first performers of the night.
Alpha Phi Alpha came out off the blocks with a slide show that set up their military themed routine. The fraternity then proceeded to pay tribute to the campus sororities. Tribute songs that they played featured artists such as Ginuwine and Ready for the World. The Beta Kappa chapter ended by stepping out to T.I.'s new hit single "What You Know".
Tau Beta Sigma, who hasn't stepped since 2002, came out with blue prison jumpsuits to match their court room setting. The sorority's theme coincided with the brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi, all to prove a valid point.
"For the past couple of years, people have been talking about Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma as if we are just an organization for the band, really saying that we aren't Greek. We are a Greek letter organization and should be regarded as such," said De'Vin Lewis, a member of Tau Beta Sigma and a senior education major from Dallas.
Kappa Kappa Psi continued with the show with a theme titled "What's Greek?" which was in a classroom setting. Kappa Kappa Psi feels that they and their sister sorority have been highly under rated.
"Just because we aren't an African-American based organization, we haven't been respected as a Greek letter organization. Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma have experienced years of prejudice simply because our main focus is the band," said Rommie Smith, a graduating senior English major from Oklahoma City. Smith is a proud member of both Kappa Kappa Psi and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Alpha Kappa Alpha came back strong with a doll theme. Various songs like Remy's "Conceited" and Beyonce's "Check On It" were part of the program. Proud Langston University alumna Tierney Cook was present in the audience to support her sorors.
Johnson then came up with an idea for a short intermission; he decided to have a talent contest. Despite the array of talent, Lewis won the contest with her rendition of "The ABCs."
"The song was inspired by Thomas J. Flagg III. We used to just sit around the house and make up jazzy renditions of nursery rhymes. So when I finally got the mic, that's what came out. What could be a better way to get ample crowd participation?" Lewis said.
Phi Beta Sigma gave a grand finale with their all-star basketball theme. A tribute to the ladies of the audience began with Tyrese's "On Top of Me." As the evening came to an end, the Sigma's ended with Lil Flip's "Game Over."
During the after party, the crowd learned that Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma were the winners of the step show. Both received trophies and $1,000.
