The Sociology Club at LU-Tulsa hosted a program, "The Contributions of African-American Women in American History/Civil Rights Movement" on Feb. 22 to celebrate black women's accomplishments and their role in shaping the country. During the program, which featured African dances and guest speakers on a number of topics, outstanding African-Americans in the community were recognized.
"Traditionally African-American women have played a significant role in our society and history, yet little emphasis has been placed on where, when, why and how African-American women have shaped our country and the civil rights movement," said Dr. Art Williams, associate vice president of community outreach. "For today's children the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s is as remote as the civil war; Dr. King's birthday is just another day off from school or work. But, without the help, support, hard work, and education of many people-particularly African American women-many gains would not have been accomplished. Rosa Park's act of defiance that sparked the national civil rights movement probably would have not been as successful if it were not for other historic African-American women behind the scenes."
