Last week, Eric Harris, a junior from East St. Louis, Ill., was crowned Mr. Langston University 2009. It was a regal affair as four of Langston's finest young men vied for one of the university's highest honors. Harris' competitors were Anthony Crawford, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif.

Gang violence hurts Black community, officer says

Marvin Blades, an officer for the Tulsa Police Department, spoke at an open discussion on gang violence sponsored by student members of the NAACP Feb. 9. The seminar was supposed to address and compare gang and Greek activity, but Blades ended up speaking on a deeper concern: gang violence among Black males and its affect on the Tulsa community.

Going vegetarian saves animals, the environment, and your health

It appears that most Americans have either ignored or didn't get the memo that fruits and veggies are a body's best friend, and meat, while quite tasty, just isn't that good for you. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, last year the average American ate approximately 84 pounds of chicken, 64 pounds of beef, 48 pounds of pork, and 17 pounds of turkey.

LU-Tulsa hosts event to discuss civil rights groups

Langston University-Tulsa will celebrate Black History Month with an event that commemorates the heritage of African-Americans and the 100 year anniversary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In honor of the NAACP's centennial anniversary, the LU-Tulsa's sociology department will co-host "The Relevance of Civil Rights Groups in the 21st Century" on Thursday, Feb.

News to Know . . .

A federal aviation official says the commuter flight that crashed and killed 50 people near Buffalo dropped 800 feet in five seconds shortly before impact. Investigators also say the plane was on autopilot when it went down in icy weather, indicating that the pilot may have violated federal safety recommendations and the airline's own policy for flying in such conditions.

Refund Check Disbursement Information

Langston University has taken the position that refunds will be disbursed in accordance to the following schedule: Refunds dated Monday, February 16, 2009 will be disbursed at the Business Office on February 20, 2009. Any refunds dated after Monday, February 16, 2009 will be disbursed 5 business days (excludes Saturday and Sunday) after the date indicated on the student's account.
