Carla Wood works to increase LU's retention rate one student at a time
The movement to better the university is in full effect with the planning of new buildings and the renovation of others, the hiring of new people, and even the creation of new departments to better serve the student body. One of the newest and most needed departments is the Department of Student Retention, which is headed by Carla Wood, a 1983 LU alumna.

Dance troupe pirouettes through LU
Love was in the air on Valentine's Day, especially in the I.W. Young Auditorium where the members of the Dallas Black Dance Theatre II (DBDT II) captivated students and staff. Dancers performed during seven different scenes. The audience was deeply engrossed by the fluid movement of the dancers, as well as the music chosen for each performance that seemed to go almost perfectly with each dance.

In celebration of Black History Month, the university hosted a Black economic empowerment forum to inspire students to become the producers of their future. Mark Flemon, assistant vice president for student affairs, hosted the event that took place Monday evening in the school's atrium.

Mt. Bethel Baptist Church was packed to capacity this past Sunday as three students were awarded the Dr. John W. Coleman Scholarship. The students, one of whom is a student at Langston, were presented their scholarships in the amount of $500 by Reverend Jimmie L.

Honda team places third in tournament

Honda team places third in tournament
The university's Honda All-Star Team took third place in the Pre-National Championship Tournament (Pre-NCT) at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). The team competed against other HBCUs from around the country at UMES on Feb. 9 and 10. During the event, the teams were quizzed on various subjects, such as history and science, as well as world issues and social topics.

According to statistics published by the Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 700,000 people die of heart disease in the United States each year, which accounts for about 29-percent of all U.

Serial rapist responsible for student's death A 19-year-old college student missing since she was abducted nearly a month ago was strangled by a serial rapist. The rapist has attacked at least two other women and may strike again, Reno, Nev. police said Saturday.

Langston hosts workshops on ornamental fish ponds and commercial aquaculture

The Langston University Aquaculture Program will offer workshops for ornamental fish pond owners and commercial aquaculturists on Saturday, Feb. 23 in the Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Complex located on the main campus. Workshops are intended to provide educational and collaborative opportunities for enthusiasts, producers and researchers.

Octavia Estelle Butler was a renowned writer who is respected for breaking into and doing enormously well in the genre of science fiction, which has historically been dominated by White males. The trailblazer was born on June 22, 1947 in Pasadena, Calif.
